Massachusetts is a Hotbed for Alternative Energy: How You Can Get Involved

Thanks to advances being made in alternative energy, going green and saving money no longer have to be mutually exclusive—now especially for those living in Massachusetts.

The demand for alternative energy continues to rise and, as such, consumers stand to gain. The price of solar energy, for example, fell 15 percent between 2012 and 2013, even as it accounted for 29 percent of all new electricity generation capacity that same year.

The Bay State is a particular hotbed for alternative energy, finishing fourth in the nation for its 237.2 megawatt-increase in capacity in 2013. A driving force behind solar adoption is that it is less expensive for companies to produce than other energy sources. Additionally, solar is generally more accessible and thus easier to harness.

Massachusetts residents can get in on the action by participating in the state’s growing alternative energy movement. Here are a few ways MA citizens (or citizens of any state, for that matter) can do so:

• Embrace affordable green energy: Make an energy choice that makes a difference. Moving from a “brown” energy supplier to a green supplier is a great way to begin making a change that works for you. Start your process by exploring suppliers that cater to your area.
• Get involved in the community: It’s easy to get involved in the “green scene." For example, participate in state or town fairs or simply shop local and organic. In Massachusetts, the Boston Greenfest will be taking place at the Boston City Hall Plaza from August 15-17, representing the region’s largest environmental festival.
• Cut down energy usage in other ways: If for any reason you can’t make the move to a green energy supplier, there are things you can do around the home to decrease your footprint—and energy bill. This can include keeping your air conditioning at a minimum this summer and unplugging devices even when they are off, as this still draws energy.

Residents of Massachusetts should be proud of the strides that their home state is making in the green realm. Maryland group aims to connect green consumers, businesses

In Carroll County, Maryland, a small environmental group has developed a new program that hopes to bring togetherbusinesses focused on sustainability and consumers who are equally aware, the Carroll County Times reports.
According to the news source, the initiative is the culmination of hard work done by a newly formed committee made up of members from Waste Not! Carroll, Sustainable Living Maryland and the Catoctin chapter of the Sierra Club. Sally Long, a committee member, stated that the program was based on a similar one that is already functioning in North Carolina. Committee member Don West originally proposed the idea, saying it would be a great way for the Green Business Network in Carroll County to help eco-savvy consumers buy products from green companies.
The program uses a scorecard to rate businesses in the area on their green status, which is then released on the groups website for all to see.
"The way I see it, all businesses want to be sustainable, otherwise they wouldn't be in business," Long told the media outlet. "We wanted to help businesses recognize that being 'green friendly' could result in financial benefits as well as environmental and community benefits."
A new focus
The scorecard will bring to light four different areas related to environmental progress, which is meant to incentivize companies to adopt a more sustainable business model. These areas include solid waste management, green purchasing tactics, efficient energy consumption and renewable energy and water conservation.
Dan Andrews, another committee member, said any business can fall into one of three tiers that displays their green status, which will be printed onto a decal and displayed at the business.
"We tried to keep phase one of this very practical and pragmatic," Andrews said. "People can begin to learn these methods and these techniques and phase into more sustainable practices over the course."
The media outlet noted that although some committee members expected resistance from local business owners, the majority were supportive of the idea.
"Once they see what we've tried to do, it's been unanimous as far as thinking this is a good idea," West added.
It's becoming much easier for green businesses in America to get off the ground thanks to growing demand for sustainable practices. To help nurture these businesses, South by Southwest has launched its Eco Startup Central, which will help companies devoted to green operations find their footing.

The home was furthermore positioned purposefully on an East-West axis to provide for ideal conditions that naturally assist insulation and heating systems. The house is equipped with a geothermal heating and cooling system under the wood floors. The family further "greened" their home by holding onto any wood or fixtures from their previous home and reusing them in the construction of their ultimate green energy home.

The U.S. economy has experienced a great deal of turmoil in recent years, with many Americans spending months or even years on unemployment while competing for fewer jobs in a contracting marketplace. Green energy, however, has given many individuals a second chance to make a living.

Three members of the Starr family lost their jobs at a window and door manufacturing plant in 2008, according to a recent article from Suntech Power. The mother, father and son, all qualified employees in the manufacturing business, have found work in a local solar plant.

“Solar is still in its infancy as far as the world is concerned,” Mike Starr told Suntech. “It’s a huge growth industry that’s making a tangible impact on a better future.”

The solar industry remains largely untapped in terms of an employment options. One common misconception is that the industry only provides career opportunities for those with an engineering or technical background, yet the industry has a number of positions for individuals with marketing, sales and IT backgrounds as well. However, because most solar manufacturers are still largely "under the radar," searching for job postings may take a little more effort than traditional job offerings. However, this may also mean less competition for job seekers, and so can provide a great opportunity for those willing to look.

As the world strives to tackle growing global energy demands, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers announced June 26 that algae are a valuable source of sustainable energy.
The release indicates that the U.S. Department of Energy predicts global energy usage to increase 53 percent by 2035, creating substantial demands to incorporate green energy sources and sustainable energy into world plans to reduce dependence on depleting fossil fuel resources.
IEEE said that algae is a good source of energy due to its extremely high growth rate, and it is a sustainable alternative option to produce aviation gases, jet fuel and crude oil. IEEE senior member and CEO of Algaeon Inc. William Kassebaum maintains that an acre of corn can generate 300 gallons of ethanol per year while an acre of algae is capable of producing from 6,000 to 10,000 gallons of light sweet crude oil per year.
IEEE additionally pursues other current renewable energy sources, including wind and solar. With the cost of energy from wind sources falling, it is fast becoming an “attractive non-carbon source of energy,” said Peter Tavner, a UK-based IEEE senior member and president of the European Academy of Wind Energy. IEEE is tackling the issues that are rising from the evolving grid system, green energy goals and energy demands.

Go Green with bamboo

Bamboo: It's not just for pandas anymore. Although the plant has been a staple of construction and design in many Asian nations for thousands of years, Americans are just beginning to realize the many potential uses for the exotic shoots.
"Since bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth and a sustainable building material, it could easily substitute all known wood applications without having to cut down entire bamboo groves or plantations," Guadua Bamboo, a bamboo nursery and furniture shop, wrote on its website. "Better yet, bamboo continuously grows after harvest without having to re-plant it. Bamboo also converts about 35 percent more CO2 into oxygen than a regular tree."
Bamboo flooring is both a beautiful design accent to a home and is also a great way to show a love for sustainability. Phys.org recently reported on a school in Bali that is made completely out of bamboo. Featuring an arching roof with a number of skylights, the school is one of many buildings on the island that uses bamboo as its primary building material. A local chocolate factory was even made from the wood!
Utensils, cutting boards, bedding sheets and even strainers can be made from bamboo as well.

Tuesday night, June 5, 2012, at the Direct Selling Association awards banquet in Dallas I had the incredible opportunity to accept an award that is the most coveted recognition a young company in the Network Marketing channel can ever hope to receive. In the surprise and excitement of the moment of hearing Viridian's name called, going on stage and being asked to say a few words, I don't think anyone articulates exactly what they would have said had they had time to prepare for such an honor.

I wish I could say I was as precise as the copy below (what I actually said in those brief moments was definitely in the body of the text below somewhere) but regardless - over 800 industry peers now clearly have a better understanding of what the Viridian brand represents. I wanted to share the words I would have said had I been give three minutes and a teleprompter - as this award belongs to all of the people of Generation V; our corporate staff, field Associates and customers and we should not let this moment in our history pass without giving it due reflection.

It is with humility and gratitude I accept the Direct Selling Association's Rising Star Award for 2012 on behalf of the Viridian Community and our CEO and Founder, Michael Fallquist. I thank the DSA for their continuing efforts to protect this great industry that empowers ordinary people to experience extraordinary results.

I joined Viridian a year and a half ago, over a year after Michael birthed his vision to create a new category in the energy space merging affordable green energy with renewable energy development. Our 7 Continents in 7 Years initiative clearly demonstrates our commitment to global sustainability initiatives as we annually take our top field leaders on Voluntourism trips combining service projects with celebration of their successes. We have planted trees in the Amazon of South America, installed solar panels on schools and clinics in villages in Africa, and next year we take them to Asia.

We believe our Associates have the power to change the world - this is not just a sensational statement but a core belief.
