Goldman Sachs amps up renewable energy investment

Goldman Sachs amps up renewable energy investment

Goldman Sachs amps up renewable energy investmentRenewable energy has sometimes been seen by outsiders as a progressive industry, one for companies and individuals more concerned with the environment than their wallets, more into green trees than green bills. But those involved in the industry have long known that is not the full story. And with Goldman Sachs increasing its investment in renewable energy, one has to wonder if maybe renewable energy has cemented its status as big business.
Investment banking titan ups renewable energy portfolio
According to the Financial Times, Goldman Sachs has invested $135 million in ReNew Wind Power, an Indian wind farm company. Combined with previous investments, that means Goldman now has $385 million invested in the company.
Ankur Sahu is co-head of private equity in Asia at Goldman Sachs, and he spoke to the Financial Times about the company's turn to renewable energy power generation companies like ReNew Wind Power, saying shortages in energy production and a variety of new tariffs have led them to ramp up production.
"All these factors play into being in power generation more than in the suppliers," Sahu told the FT. "We feel that generation is certainly the more interesting place to be."
Not their first entry into the market
Last month, Goldman announced it would be investing up to $487 million in JRE, a solar power generation company in Japan. It may be a developing trend - after all, the Wall Street Journal's website notes that the company has vastly increasedits clean-energy budget, moving from 1.4 billion in 2006 to $4.3 billion last year. And all of this comes on the heels of last week's two announcements by Google about renewable energy investments in Africa and Europe, where they will be spending millions of dollars on wind farms and solar energy. All around the world people are interested in renewable energy - in the UK last year, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey said he thought renewable energy could "create a multi-billion pound boom for the British economy, driving growth and supporting jobs across the country."
Europe, Africa, Asia - these titans of American capitalism are spending millions of dollars on renewable energy around the world. People may think of investment banks like Goldman Sachs as cutthroat profiteers, but certainly their investment is good for the industry, good for Goldman Sachs and, above all, good for the future of the environment.

Cutting energy use in hospitals with renewables

Cutting energy use in hospitals with renewables

Cutting energy use in hospitals with renewablesThe U.S. Department of Energy's Commercial Buildings Program and National Renewable Energy Laboratory announced that they are working with the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and the general buildings industry to research means to reduce the energy used by high-level consumers such as large hospitals, schools and retail buildings. The partnerships resulted in a series of guidelines for energy design that could help facilitate a 50 percent savings for buildings designed for high-level consumers, achievable by making electric choices that are designed to be "easy to implement."
Shanti Pless, NREL Senior Research Engineer and Chair of the Advanced Energy Design Guidelines project, revealed that the AEDG series "represents the best practices in industry for energy efficiency in buildings."
Given the fact that U.S. hospitals spend more than $5 billion a year on energy, which on average equals 1 to 3 percent of a hospital's budget for operating, Pless said, "We felt this industry needed resources, and there weren't many out there helping them to achieve 50 percent savings in energy."
The NREL has been operating for roughly 35 years, aiming to help facilitate the emergence of the green energy industry, and is reportedly the only national laboratory that is dedicated to advancing the renewable energy industry and energy efficiency technologies from the initial concept phase through to commercial applications.

Green roof built for NY Post Office

Green roof built for NY Post Office

Green roof built for NY Post Office
The U.S. Postal Service recently unveiled an 11,300-square-foot green roof installation in upstate New York, its second green roof to date, reported Environmental Leader.
The green roof construction consisted of verifying the soundness to support extra weight, fitting the roof with a new membrane, and installing layers of drainage sheet, mat, separation fabric, indigenous vegetation and a wind blanket.
The roof is expected to last roughly 50 years, and it will reduce the amount of contaminants in storm water runoff flowing into the municipal water system. The USPS said the roof should “help the post office reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.”
While the USPS sustainability report released on June 25 does show that the organization's carbon emissions rose 0.7 percent from 2010 to 2011 despite a decline in revenue, USPS is making other strides toward sustainability, with a target goal of cutting energy use by 30 percent by 2015. The green roof installation is part of the USPS’s “greener facilities strategy,” which incorporates the use of environmentally friendly building components and renewable materials, the installation of energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems, and the use of low-water fixtures in facilities, with some photovoltaic systems incorporation.

Sunblock to keep the pain at bay

Sunblock to keep the pain at bay

Sunblock to keep the pain at bayAs many people know, the power of the sun is great for producing green energy, but can be harmful for human skin.  For sun worshippers who are hoping to hit the beach quite often this summer, the best thing they can do for their epidermis and the Earth is use eco-friendly sunblock.
A number of sunscreens have recently been reported to contain harmful chemicals. While many consumers use sunblock to prevent the risk of skin cancer, sunblocks that include vitamin A in their formulas may actually put an individual at a higher risk of developing skin tumors, the Environmental Working Group reported.
The EWG currently has a guide to safer sunscreens that consumers can find on the group's website, which beachgoers can use to find the most affordable and health-beneficial sunscreen. According to the source, most sunblocks marketed to babies and young children are the safest for adults, too.
According to Grist magazine, between 4,000 and 6,000 tons of sunscreen are going into the world's oceans annually, so choosing a healthy sunscreen can also assist the world's largest waterways in their health as well. Sunscreens with avobenzone provide some of the most mindful UVA protection, so consumers should keep their eye out for companies that use this, but not oxybenzone.

Green energy within reach for many consumers

Green energy within reach for many consumers

Green energy within reach for many consumers
Homeowners, even those who live in states without energy deregulation, are likely able to afford solar power, according to a recent article from Travis Hoium on behalf of financial company The Motley Fool.
"Solar power is no longer something only wealthy, eco-conscious homeowners can afford," wrote Hoium. "It's now within reach for most electricity users in the U.S., and it may make financial sense for you to switch."
The costs of solar power have continued to drop, with both solar installations and the power created from the panels sometimes costing even less than other panels. Some solar panels are selling for as little as $1 per panel, and installation costs are just as reasonable.
According to the Solar Power Authority, solar panel-produced electricity costs an average of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. However, electricity-sucking devices like hot tubs can produce occasional spikes in these estimates. These costs also vary dramatically depending on an individual's state of residence. According to The Motley Fool, solar projects in California are selling for as low as $0.089 per kilowatt-hour.

Since it began in the late 1990s, deregulation of energy has created opportunity throughout the marketplace.

Since it began in the late 1990s, deregulation of energy has created opportunity throughout the marketplace.

Deregulation allows consumers to choose where they buy their power, much as they can choose their long-distance company. This choice creates a competitive marketplace in which each energy company is working to provide the best product. Creating competition drives prices down and improves quality.

Our product
Viridian Energy is proud to stand out among its competitors by offering an affordable product that meets or exceeds the proposed 2020 federal environmental goal of 20% renewable energy.

It's safe and reliable energy
Under deregulation, each part of your energy service is broken down into separate pieces that are provided by different companies. Delivery of the electricity to your home as well as all necessary service is still provided by your utility, making it possible for you to still have safe and reliable electricity in your home. Electric suppliers like Viridian are licensed by state and federal agencies and are not in competition with the local utility. The local utility does not make any money on the energy, only on the delivery and service of electricity, so the utility company supports customers who choose to switch suppliers. We provide greener energy to the grid and your utility delivers that energy to your home or business. It's that simple. All this adds up to a perfect reason for you to exercise your choice to select the best supplier for your electricity.

It's up to you
Deregulation means you can shop around to find the product that's best for you. You have a choice. Why wouldn't you make the choice that saves you money and helps the environment? You can make a difference for your family and the environment with Viridian.
