Algae as new energy source

Algae as new energy source

Algae as new energy sourceAs the world strives to tackle growing global energy demands, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers announced June 26 that algae are a valuable source of sustainable energy.
The release indicates that the U.S. Department of Energy predicts global energy usage to increase 53 percent by 2035, creating substantial demands to incorporate green energy sources and sustainable energy into world plans to reduce dependence on depleting fossil fuel resources.
IEEE said that algae is a good source of energy due to its extremely high growth rate, and it is a sustainable alternative option to produce aviation gases, jet fuel and crude oil. IEEE senior member and CEO of Algaeon Inc. William Kassebaum maintains that an acre of corn can generate 300 gallons of ethanol per year while an acre of algae is capable of producing from 6,000 to 10,000 gallons of light sweet crude oil per year.
IEEE additionally pursues other current renewable energy sources, including wind and solar. With the cost of energy from wind sources falling, it is fast becoming an “attractive non-carbon source of energy,” said Peter Tavner, a UK-based IEEE senior member and president of the European Academy of Wind Energy. IEEE is tackling the issues that are rising from the evolving grid system, green energy goals and energy demands.

Beat the heat without becoming an energy hog

Beat the heat without becoming an energy hog

Beat the heat without becoming an energy hog
Sustainability can be especially difficult for individuals who face temperatures upward of 100 degrees during the summer months. However, there are ways to stay cool in the face of a hot, humid summer without using excessive electricity along the way.
By timing air flow into a home, individuals can keep their abodes much more livable. Grist recommends individuals block heat from their home by putting light- and air-blocking covers over windows and areas that the heat seeps into - even blinds and thick curtains can work. Yahoo! recommends lighter colored curtains, as these help to reflect the light out. Once the sun has set and the cooler temperatures have come back, throw open the covers to let the cool air in.
Opening cabinets and large shelves will also let the house take in a bit more cool air, as these open areas will easily trap heat throughout the day.
Commuters who face extreme heat for half an hour or more may want to wet their shirt before going to work, according to Grist. Although it may sound crazy, if the temperature is high, the shirt will be dry before getting to work, and the individual will stay much cooler along the way.

Go Green with bamboo

Go Green with bamboo

Go green with bambooBamboo: It's not just for pandas anymore. Although the plant has been a staple of construction and design in many Asian nations for thousands of years, Americans are just beginning to realize the many potential uses for the exotic shoots.
"Since bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth and a sustainable building material, it could easily substitute all known wood applications without having to cut down entire bamboo groves or plantations," Guadua Bamboo, a bamboo nursery and furniture shop, wrote on its website. "Better yet, bamboo continuously grows after harvest without having to re-plant it. Bamboo also converts about 35 percent more CO2 into oxygen than a regular tree."
Bamboo flooring is both a beautiful design accent to a home and is also a great way to show a love for sustainability. Phys.org recently reported on a school in Bali that is made completely out of bamboo. Featuring an arching roof with a number of skylights, the school is one of many buildings on the island that uses bamboo as its primary building material. A local chocolate factory was even made from the wood!
Utensils, cutting boards, bedding sheets and even strainers can be made from bamboo as well.

Viridian earns Rising Star Award at the DSA 2012

Read Meredith Berkich's Thoughts below:

Viridian earns Rising Star Award at the DSA 2012
SVP Meredith Berkich & VP Bob Ulrich in Dallas, Texas

Tuesday night, June 5, 2012, at the Direct Selling Association awards banquet in Dallas I had the incredible opportunity to accept an award that is the most coveted recognition a young company in the Network Marketing channel can ever hope to receive. In the surprise and excitement of the moment of hearing Viridian's name called, going on stage and being asked to say a few words, I don't think anyone articulates exactly what they would have said had they had time to prepare for such an honor.

I wish I could say I was as precise as the copy below (what I actually said in those brief moments was definitely in the body of the text below somewhere) but regardless - over 800 industry peers now clearly have a better understanding of what the Viridian brand represents. I wanted to share the words I would have said had I been give three minutes and a teleprompter - as this award belongs to all of the people of Generation V; our corporate staff, field Associates and customers and we should not let this moment in our history pass without giving it due reflection.

It is with humility and gratitude I accept the Direct Selling Association's Rising Star Award for 2012 on behalf of the Viridian Community and our CEO and Founder, Michael Fallquist. I thank the DSA for their continuing efforts to protect this great industry that empowers ordinary people to experience extraordinary results.

I joined Viridian a year and a half ago, over a year after Michael birthed his vision to create a new category in the energy space merging affordable green energy with renewable energy development. Our 7 Continents in 7 Years initiative clearly demonstrates our commitment to global sustainability initiatives as we annually take our top field leaders on Voluntourism trips combining service projects with celebration of their successes. We have planted trees in the Amazon of South America, installed solar panels on schools and clinics in villages in Africa, and next year we take them to Asia.

We believe our Associates have the power to change the world - this is not just a sensational statement but a core belief. To give you an idea, last year the Customers that our Associates enrolled made individual choices to switch to Viridian that resulted in a collective impact of preventing over 208 million pounds of carbon emissions from being released into our atmosphere. This equates to 2.4 million trees being planted - 18,525 cars being taken off of the roads - 1.1 billion 2-litre plastic bottles being recycled.

Our Associates, like to say that "we did not inherit this planet from our ancestors; we are borrowing it from our children". Their belief in us and our mission makes it our sacred trust as Direct Selling Executives to empower these courageous entrepreneurs with steadfast vision, a unique selling proposition, high quality support tools, comprehensive education, and a lucrative time/value proposition.

I have been in the Direct Selling industry for over 20 years now; I know the power of the network - not only for taking products to market or for profitability but for the greater good of humankind. Together we can - together we will - make a difference. We are, Generation V.

Green energy within reach for many consumers

Green energy within reach for many consumers

Green energy within reach for many consumers
Homeowners, even those who live in states without energy deregulation, are likely able to afford solar power, according to a recent article from Travis Hoium on behalf of financial company The Motley Fool.
"Solar power is no longer something only wealthy, eco-conscious homeowners can afford," wrote Hoium. "It's now within reach for most electricity users in the U.S., and it may make financial sense for you to switch."
The costs of solar power have continued to drop, with both solar installations and the power created from the panels sometimes costing even less than other panels. Some solar panels are selling for as little as $1 per panel, and installation costs are just as reasonable.
According to the Solar Power Authority, solar panel-produced electricity costs an average of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. However, electricity-sucking devices like hot tubs can produce occasional spikes in these estimates. These costs also vary dramatically depending on an individual's state of residence. According to The Motley Fool, solar projects in California are selling for as low as $0.089 per kilowatt-hour.

Deregulation of energy

Deregulation of energy

About Deregulation
Since it began in the late 1990s, deregulation of energy has created opportunity throughout the marketplace.
Deregulation allows consumers to choose where they buy their power, much as they can choose their long-distance company. This choice creates a competitive marketplace in which each energy company is working to provide the best product. Creating competition drives prices down and improves quality.

Our product

Viridian Energy is proud to stand out among its competitors by offering an affordable product that meets or exceeds the proposed 2020 federal environmental goal of 20% renewable energy.

It's safe and reliable energy

Under deregulation, each part of your energy service is broken down into separate pieces that are provided by different companies. Delivery of the electricity to your home as well as all necessary service is still provided by your utility, making it possible for you to still have safe and reliable electricity in your home. Electric suppliers like Viridian are licensed by state and federal agencies and are not in competition with the local utility. The local utility does not make any money on the energy, only on the delivery and service of electricity, so the utility company supports customers who choose to switch suppliers. We provide greener energy to the grid and your utility delivers that energy to your home or business. It's that simple. All this adds up to a perfect reason for you to exercise your choice to select the best supplier for your electricity.

It's up to you

Deregulation means you can shop around to find the product that's best for you. You have a choice. Why wouldn't you make the choice that saves you money and helps the environment? You can make a difference for your family and the environment with Viridian Energy MA.
